No.1 ? 2015/03/18 Topic:Courses outside One's Field of Study 選修專業(yè)外的學(xué)科 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Claim: Universities should require every student to take a variety of courses outside the student's field of study. Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the claim. In developing and supporting your position, be sure to address the most compelling reasons and/or examples that could be used to challenge your position. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Universities should not include courses unrelated to a student’s major in his/her compulsory curriculum. A university student should have the autonomy in what he/she studies, while being forced to learn is usually inefficient. Plus, having less obligatory courses also means less tuition and more free time for voluntary exploration for knowledge. In the meantime, however, instead of not providing any chances of wider learning, optional courses in different disciplines should be available. It is almost universally acknowledged that most children hate schools. The reason is obvious. Nobody wants to learn things one does not like, especially when pushed to. But few people were born with a passion for alphabets, words or numbers, which to some extent are indeed necessary for later living. As a result, children do not really have a choice in what they get to learn in kindergartens or primary schools. When they grow up, nevertheless, equipped with firm preliminary skills, they should have a say in what they study, and only in this way can they truly engross themselves in learning. This is why they need to choose a field before entering universities and also why universities should avoid requiring them to take courses they might not be interested in. With less compulsory courses, on the other hand, students can have more free time, and never can we stress the importance of free time too much. Admittedly, through taking classes students can learn, but classrooms are not supposed to be where their study ends. Also, some learn even better outside the class, like Steve Jobs in his garage. The key lies in free time, without which the possibilities of students will only be further limited. To ensure there is enough time for students to develop on their own, universities should try to eliminate rather than increase redundant compulsory courses. Some people might argue that not all the students are as smart as Jobs and know what they are into before universities and that some will simply squander their free time doing hardly meaningful things like playing computer games. Granted, this kind of students might constitute the majority of current university students. However, for those who are still puzzled at what they want to learn, there is little chance that they would find out after merely taking some courses outside their fields, because their failure of finding one in the first twenty years of their lives has evidently proven that it is not a matter of opportunities but one of motivation. If they want to find one, they can go to the library or search the Internet rather than passively sit in the classroom of some subject they probably have heard of many times before; for those who would indulge themselves in playing games when free, what do we expect when they are offered a chance to study more? Wasting time in classrooms is no better than on computers. Moreover, opening more courses will surely cost a lot more, leading to an inevitable rise of the tuition, which may cause problems for indigent families. In conclusion, universities should have optional not compulsory courses in other fields of students’ study, not because the knowledge there is not important enough, but because students have the right not to learn it. A university is for those who are ready and want to study, and thus it should be a place encouraging spontaneous actions instead of conducting a force-feeding education. Besides, economically speaking, a curriculum neither less nor more is of the best interest for both universities and its students. QAQ) 5. No.7 ? 2015/03/24 Topic:Past and Decision Making 歷史與決策 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Claim: Knowing about the past cannot help people to make important decisions today. Reason: The world today is significantly more complex than it was even in the relatively recent past. Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the claim and the reason on which that claim is based. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The claim above seems to be paradoxical itself, because it is the increasingly complicated situation at present that requires us to seek help from the past. While some might say that it is merely a waste of time considering the past since there will never be two identical decisions, one can never be too circumspect to make important choices, and thus the past can provide us with precious experience to learn from. Never can there be two events in history that are literally the same, but can there be two events that are very similar? The answer is obvious if we can just look back to the 16th century England. Monarchy was first overthrown during the English Civil War, but soon it was reinstated by Oliver Cromwell. Therefore, if we can learn from the past, it can help us avoid making the same mistakes. Also, there must be some good reasons why we now have history taught in schools and why there are majors in universities about history: history class can not only get us to know about the past events, but, from analyzing them, help us understand how and why something had happened as well. The people who regard history as useless dead information also deprive themselves of chances to know ahead. Of course, no one can foresee the future, but when it comes to making decisions, looking backward can help as much as correctly grasping the prospect. Through learning from the past experience, we can know in advance what might be a prescient decision and what might be a short-sighted one. Successful businessmen always stick with the principle of ‘never make the same mistake twice’ by retrospecting bad decisions they once made. If the English people never drew a lesson from their failure of using the traditional kind of monarchy, they could never have established the constitutional monarchy today that is perfectly stable and beneficial to the overall development of the British society. Almost all the innovation come from older but similar models or examples, so is decision-making. The invention of airplanes was attributed largely to the imitation of flying birds; the whole industrial revolution was only possible after Watt had created a new type of engine based on the old one. Likewise, the American government changed its managerial plan after going through the Great Depression of the 1930s, and the plan worked and greatly improved the national economic condition. After the Watergate scandal in 1972, the officials would definitely think twice before they did anything risky or even illegal. However complex or unprecedented the present situation is, people can always find useful clues in history, where there were many failures that we can avoid and many paragons we can follow. And although we might encounter a new question, some substantial things about the answer might just quietly lie still in the torrent of time, unchanged. No.37 ? 2015/04/23 Topic:Trends of the Youth 年輕人的潮流 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The most effective way to understand contemporary culture is to analyze the trends of its youth. Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the statement and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should consider ways in which the statement might or might not hold true and explain how these considerations shape your position. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Merely analyzing the trends of the youth is not enough to understand the contemporary culture, because not only young people, but those in other ages as well, create the contemporary culture together. Besides that, culture can not be made easily through the power of the youth; culture is what can be left in the whole society after a long period of time. Culture is not something that can be created overnight. Therefore, even if something is very popular among young people, it does not mean that it can last for a long time till it actually becomes part of the contemporary culture. Some popular words make their way into the dictionaries while some don’t. Likewise, some trends are too weak to become accepted into the category of culture. The trends of the youth are not necessarily the trends of the whole society, because our society is made up by people in different layers of ages. What constitutes the majority of the society is not the young people, but those older than them. Thus, even with the great impact of youth culture on the contemporary culture, the main trend can be a comparably less noticeable one, which is made by an older and also larger group of people. The pop songs that are highly welcomed by the youth, for example, are less frequently performed on a national gala than classic music. While many youth trends did become the key to understand the current cultural status quo, some of them are transient. Hence, it is not efficacious to study those trends that are soon to fade away. Also, it might be not enough to just focus on the trends of the youth if the result is aiming at a comprehensive view of the contemporary culture. Beyond gainsay, however, the future does lie in the hands of the young. Taking a closer look into their lives can indeed help us find out the general direction our society is heading to. Although their trends only account for a proportion of the contemporary culture, in the near future the percentage will rise as these young people grow older and occupy a larger portion of the population.
