在中國神話中，人死后會前往陰間入口的奈何橋，過了奈何橋，亡魂會在望鄉(xiāng)臺邊遇見一位名叫孟婆的神祇。她會給每個(gè)經(jīng)過的亡魂遞上一碗孟婆湯。喝下這碗湯，亡魂就會忘記所有的前世記憶，包括一切愛恨情仇，煩惱牽掛。

在希臘神話里，也有類似的說法。

Lethe (忘川) 在希臘神話中廣為人知，指代遺忘之靈與遺忘之河。據(jù)傳說，忘川是紛爭女神厄里斯(Eris) 之女，是遺忘的化身。人們認(rèn)為忘川河流經(jīng)冥界，新逝者飲其水后，便會忘卻前世的所有記憶。
