“But I can assure you,” she added, “that Lizzy does not lose much by not suiting his fancy; for he is a most disagreeable, horrid man, not at all worth pleasing. So high and so conceited that there was no enduring him! He walked here, and he walked there, fancying himself so very great! Not handsome enough to dance with! I wish you had been there, my dear, to have given him one of your set downs. I quite detest the man.”

1. assure
用法:“can assure you”,向?qū)Ψ奖WC。

2. suiting
用法:“not suiting his fancy”,不符合他的喜好。

"But I can assure you," she added, "that Lizzy does not lose much by not suiting his fancy; for he is a most disagreeable, horrid man, not at all worth pleasing."

3. disagreeable

He was the proudest, most disagreeable man in the world, and every body hoped that he would never come there again.

Germany is a helpful, though somewhat exacting friend, that she is a tight and tenacious bargainer, and a most disagreeable antagonist.

"I quite agree with you, Madam," said Uncle Andrew. "a most disagreeable place. Completely uncivilized. If only I were a younger man and had a gun –".

4. horrid

Does it bother you that you have this image as a horrid man?

But the horrid man image would come from the mistaken idea that the barrister is there bullying people all the time, leaning on them unfairly, taking advantage of them in the witness box.

Judging alongside Rosen were Horrid Henry author Francesca Simon and illustrator Tony Ross, Yes Man author and journalist Danny Wallace and author Grace Dent.

5. conceited

6. enduring
用法:“no enduring him”,無法忍受他。

7. fancying
用法:“fancying himself so very great”,自以為非常了不起。

8. detest
用法:“quite detest the man”,極其痛恨那個人。

1. “But I can assure you,” she added, “that Lizzy does not lose much by not suiting his fancy;”

2. “for he is a most disagreeable, horrid man, not at all worth pleasing.”

not at all worth pleasing:完全不值得討好。

3. “So high and so conceited that there was no enduring him!”

conceited:自負(fù)的。

enduring:忍受。

4. “He walked here, and he walked there, fancying himself so very great!”

fancying himself so very great:自以為非常了不起。

“walked here, and he walked there”,自負(fù)的外在表現(xiàn)。

5. “Not handsome enough to dance with! I wish you had been there, my dear, to have given him one of your set downs.”

Not handsome enough to dance with:不夠漂亮到能與之共舞。

6. “I quite detest the man.”
