備受期待的科幻史詩(shī)大片《沙丘》上周末上映，截至昨日，全球票房已超過(guò)2.2億美元，折合人民幣近15億元。該片在中國(guó)內(nèi)陸的首周末也創(chuàng)下1.4億人民幣票房。

The first installment of Dune, a science-fiction epic starring Timothée Chalamet, notched an estimated $40.1 million at the North American box office over the weekend. It marks the biggest opening for Warner Bros this year. So far, Dune has made $220 million globally. This weekend, it debuted with $21.6 million in China.

《沙丘》改編自弗蘭克·赫伯特1965年創(chuàng)作的史詩(shī)科幻巨著。成功執(zhí)導(dǎo)了科幻電影《銀翼殺手2049》和《降臨》的丹尼斯·維倫紐瓦擔(dān)任導(dǎo)演，“甜茶”蒂莫西·柴勒梅德領(lǐng)銜主演。

Set on Arrakis, an inhospitable desert planet valued for its hallucinogenic 'spice,' the novel follows the journey of young Paul Atreides whose family has been tasked with overseeing the planet — taking the place of their rivals, the Harkonnens.

The story features everything from spaceships and extraterrestrial life forms called sandworms to themes revolving around betrayal, politics and religion.

這不是《沙丘》第一次被改編成電影。

Dune is the second big-screen attempt to adapt Frank Herbert's 1965 epic, following David Lynch's much derided 1984 version. Villeneuve's Dune, which adapts only the first half of the book, stars Timothée Chalamet, Oscar Isaac, Rebecca Ferguson, Zendaya and Javier Bardem. 

這部《沙丘》是弗蘭克·赫伯特的1965年史詩(shī)原著第二次被改編成電影，早前大衛(wèi)·林奇執(zhí)導(dǎo)的1984版《沙丘》曾備受嘲諷。維倫紐瓦導(dǎo)演的這部《沙丘》只改編了原著的上半部，主演包括蒂莫西·柴勒梅德、奧斯卡·伊薩克、麗貝卡·弗格森、贊達(dá)亞和賈維爾·巴爾頓。

Dune has often been considered 'unfilmable.' As Marina Hassapopoulou, a professor of Cinema Studies at New York University, puts it, 'the source material is too sublime to be adapted (and limited to) an audiovisual medium like cinema, and that makes it challenging to adapt from book to film.'

Villeneuve told the Los Angeles Times 'it took a long time to find the right equilibrium' between maintaining the main storyline and capturing some of the text's complexities, while also keeping some sense of 'mystery.'

Despite some of its denser themes, the Dune story has many universally recognizable elements. The feud between House Atreides and House Harkonnen is a trope readers of classic literature -- such as Romeo and Juliet and Wuthering Heights -- are already familiar with.

'Aspects of the story are really universal, but then you've got sandworms, you've got spaceships -- you've got all these fun, strange sci-fi things to play around with,' said Patrick Willems, YouTube video essayist.

Villeneuve, known for Blade Runner 2049 and Arrival, has said in earlier interviews that he was obsessed with Herbert's novel when he was a teenager, and made the film as his love letter.

'As he has done with the Blade Runner legacy via Blade Runner 2049 (2017), Villeneuve is capable of bringing in new fans and sparking renewed interest in the source materials,' Hassapopoulou said. 'His film Arrival demonstrates that he is capable of handling complex storytelling in a way that still makes it accessible to mainstream audiences.'

Hassapopoulou said Hollywood's output since the 1990s has been 'increasingly demanding more intellectually active and critically engaged viewers,' which means the new Dune may appeal to newer generations who 'are not put off by aesthetic experimentation and convoluted narratives.'
