Victory, union, faith, identity, time,

The indissoluble compacts, riches, mystery,

Eternal progress, the kosmos, and themodern reports.

This then is life,

Here is what has come to the surface afterso many throes and convulsions.

How curious! how real!

Underfoot the divine soil, overhead thesun.

See revolving the globe,

The ancestor-continents away group'dtogether,

The present and future continents north andsouth, with the isthmus

between.

See, vast trackless spaces,

As in a dream they change, they swiftlyfill,

Countless masses debouch upon them,

They are now cover'd with the foremostpeople, arts, institutions, known.

See, projected through time,

For me an audience interminable.

With firm and regular step they wend, theynever stop,

Successions of men, Americanos, a hundredmillions,

One generation playing its part and passingon,

Another generation playing its part andpassing on in its turn,

With faces turn'd sideways or backwardtowards me to listen,

With eyes retrospective towards me.

這便是生活，

這便是經(jīng)過了多少苦痛的痙攣之后出現(xiàn)于表面的東西。

多么新奇！多么真實(shí)??！

足下是神圣的土地，頭上是太陽。

看哪，旋轉(zhuǎn)著的地球，

古老的大陸在遠(yuǎn)處聚在一起，

現(xiàn)在與未來的大陸在南北分立中間則有著地峽。

看哪，廣大的無垠的空間，

如像在夢中一樣地變化著，并迅速的充實(shí)起來，

在這上面，涌現(xiàn)了無數(shù)的人群，

現(xiàn)在滿是已知的最先進(jìn)的人民、藝術(shù)、制度。

看哪，通過時間，將出現(xiàn)

我的無窮無盡的聽眾。

他們用堅(jiān)定而有規(guī)律的步子走著，永不停留，

連續(xù)不斷的人，美洲人，一萬萬的人民，

每一世代都履行了它的職務(wù)，然后退下去了，

別的世代又接著履行它們的職務(wù)，又輪流著退下去了，

但它們都轉(zhuǎn)回頭或側(cè)著臉在向我凝望，

以回顧的眼神望著我，在細(xì)細(xì)地傾聽。
